Democratic Primary FAQs
Here are the commonly asked questions that you will hear during the Democratic primary. If a voter has a question that you cannot answer let them know that they should call their County Clerk's office.
General Questions
Q. What day is the primary?
A. The primary day is officially on Tuesday, August 10, but every registered Democrat will have the opportunity to vote early before that day.
Q. How do I vote in the primary?
A. You have to determine what method of voting will be used in your county. Most of the counties will be conducting the primary by mail ballot, but the three different types of voting are mail-in ballot counties, vote center counties, and polling place counties.
Q. What are the differences between the three types of voting?
A. See the section on each type of voting.
Q. If I'm Unaffiliated, can I vote in the Democratic Primary?
A. The primary is a closed primary, so you need to be a Democrat to take part. However, if you are Unaffiliated, you can request a ballot in person and then vote or you can vote in person. In doing so, you are affiliating yourself with the Democratic Party. You can only vote if you choose to affiliate yourself (although you CAN change back afterwards).
Q. What sort of identification do I need for voting in the primary?
A. If the voter is a first-time Colorado voter and (s)he registered to vote by mail, (s)he will have to include a copy of identification with his/her mail-in ballot. This also applies to counties that vote at polling locations.
- - The ballot will include information on who is subject to ID requirement.
- - The following identification is acceptable:
- * Colorado driver's license
- * ID Card issued by the Department of Revenue
- * United States passport
- * Employee identification card with a photograph of the eligible elector issued by any branch, department, agency, or entity of the United States government or of this state, or any county, municipality, board, authority or other political subdivision of this state
- * Pilot's license issued by the FAA or other authorized agency of the United States
- * United States military identification card with a photograph of the eligible elector
- * Copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows the name and address of the elector
- * Medicare or Medicaid card issued by the United States health care financing administration
- * Certified copy of a birth certificate for the elector issued in the United States
- * Certified documentation of naturalization
- * Student identification card with a photograph issued by an institution on higher education in Colorado
Types of Voting
Mail Ballot Counties
Q. How does mail ballot voting work?
A. In counties that are conducting the primary by mail, ALL registered Democrats will receive a ballot in the mail as early as 22 days before the primary. You can then vote in a few different ways. You can simply complete and return your ballot by mail. You can complete your ballot and drop it off at a drop off center location in your county (see your county clerk's website). You can also vote in person or request a mail ballot in person at your county clerk's office or any service centers that are open in your county (again, see your county clerk's website). If you are returning your ballot by mail, you need to make sure that it is received by the county clerk before 7PM on Tuesday, August 10.
Q. Who all receives a ballot in the mail in counties that are voting by mail?
A. Any registered Democrat, active or inactive, will receive a ballot in the mail in counties that vote by mail.
Q. Can I return someone else's mail ballot?
A. If you're returning a ballot(s) in person, you can return up to 10 ballots.
Q. What should a voter do if they are registered as a Democrat and voted in 2008, but didn't receive their MIB?
A. Go to your local Service Center or County Clerk office and you can get a replacement ballot.
Q.What should a voter do if they registered as a Democrat and voted in 2008 by mail-in ballot, but moved to a different county in Colorado and didn't get new ballot?
A. Go to your local Service Center or County Clerk office and you can get a replacement ballot.
Q.What should a voter do if they received their MIB and then they lost it?
A. Go to your local Service Center or County Clerk office and you can get a replacement ballot
Q.What should a voter do if they received their MIB, and it gets damaged, or they want to vote in person?
A. Go to your local Service Center or County Clerk office and you can get a replacement ballot.
Q. What is a Service Center?
A. A Service Center is a place where you can drop-off your mail ballot and get a replacement ballot. It also has a touchscreen voting machine that people can vote on and is the place unaffiliated voters can register and vote. Touchscreen voting machines are handicap accessible, but any registered Democrat in that county can vote on a touchscreen if they would prefer.
Vote Center Counties
Q. How does voting work in a vote center county?
A. In vote center counties, you can drop off your mail-in ballot or you can vote in person. You can vote in person at any vote center in the county either during the Early Voting Period (see your specific county info) or on the day of the Primary on Tuesday, August 10.
Polling Place Counties
Q. How does voting work in a polling place county?
A. In polling place counties, you can drop off your mail-in ballot at the County Clerk office. You can also vote early at the County Clerk office. If you're voting in person on Election Day, you need to vote at your traditional polling place.
