Democratic Primary FAQs

Here are the commonly asked questions that you will hear during the Democratic primary. If a voter has a question that you cannot answer let them know that they should call their County Clerk's office.

General Questions

Q. What day is the primary?
A. The primary day is officially on Tuesday, August 10, but every registered Democrat will have the opportunity to vote early before that day.

Q. How do I vote in the primary?
A. You have to determine what method of voting will be used in your county. Most of the counties will be conducting the primary by mail ballot, but the three different types of voting are mail-in ballot counties, vote center counties, and polling place counties.

Q. What are the differences between the three types of voting?
A. See the section on each type of voting.

Q. If I'm Unaffiliated, can I vote in the Democratic Primary?
A. The primary is a closed primary, so you need to be a Democrat to take part. However, if you are Unaffiliated, you can request a ballot in person and then vote or you can vote in person. In doing so, you are affiliating yourself with the Democratic Party. You can only vote if you choose to affiliate yourself (although you CAN change back afterwards).

Q. What sort of identification do I need for voting in the primary?
A. If the voter is a first-time Colorado voter and (s)he registered to vote by mail, (s)he will have to include a copy of identification with his/her mail-in ballot. This also applies to counties that vote at polling locations.
