Bennet Criticizes Supreme Court Decision on Campaign Finance

Washington -- This morning the Supreme Court voted by a 5-to-4 margin to overturn decades of precedent and allow corporations to spend unlimited amounts of money in political elections.

Senator Michael Bennet criticized the Court's ruling, expressing concern about the implications it could have for special interests to corrupt our political process.

"I am deeply disappointed by the Supreme Court's decision, which, I believe, only serves to tighten the grip of special interests on the political process. This ruling rolls back sensible restrictions on corporate influence that date back decades, and sets a dangerous precedent I cannot support," said Bennet.

Michael Bennet has been critical during the health care debate about backroom deals and the lack of transparency during negotiations. Following today's ruling by the Court, he expressed similar concerns about the ability of corporations to taint our political process.

"Allowing corporate influence to flow unfettered into federal campaigns will only undermine the confidence the American people have in their government, and serve only to stack the deck further in favor of special interests at the expense of hardworking Americans. At a time when Washington is already too out of touch with the American people and too in tune with special interests, this decision sends exactly the wrong message," said Bennet.
